ADOPT A SCHOOL PROGRAMME —
The Adopt A School Programme encourages businesses to work with schools to give young people hands-on learning experiences and develop their understanding of work and employability skills.
COMPACT, in partnership with the Riverina Eastern Region Organisation of Councils (REROC) arrange a camp, titled Build A Bridge... & get over it! This camp is held in August and is designed to promote Civil Engineering as a career using practical hands-on experiences.
Students from all schools in Wagga Wagga and the Central Murrumbidgee are invited to enter a competitive application process to attend the camp. The successful applicants are placed into teams and work with Civil Engineers from the local Shire Councils.
These teams are rotated through a variety of activities, and after gaining some experience with laser levels, compaction testing, forces in equilibrium and spatial coordinates, they then attempt to plan and design a working bridge model. Once the models have been created, the teams are assessed and evaluated with one bridge design being announced the winner.
The winning bridge design is then constructed by all students in full scale over a creek bed at the Borambola Camp.
If you would like any further information about the Build a Bridge... & get over it! Camp or any other Adopt A School projects please contact your Careers Adviser or your local COMPACT office.
